Evelyn Elsaesser – Can our deceased loved ones really communicate with us?

Phenomenology of spontaneous After-Death Communications (ADCs) and their impact on experients: some research findings from the world’s largest ADC survey

Evelyn says: “A spontaneous After-Death Communication (ADC) occurs when a person, generally, but not always, in mourning, unexpectedly perceives a deceased person through the senses of sight, hearing, smell, or touch. Frequently, experients simply sense the presence of the deceased. ADCs are common: research estimates that 50-60% of people have one or more spontaneous contacts with a deceased person during their lifetime. These experiences are deeply reassuring for the bereaved and bring about a profound and lasting change in their belief system. The powerful beneficial impact on the grieving process is well established.

In 2018, we launched a long-term international research project entitled Investigation of the phenomenology and impact of spontaneous and direct After-Death Communications (ADCs). The team consists of Professor Chris A. Roe, Associate Professor Callum E. Cooper and Research Assistant Sophie Morrison from the University of Northampton, David Lorimer from the Scientific and Medical Network, and myself (Switzerland).

We developed a 194-item questionnaire and conducted an initial online survey in English, French and Spanish, collecting 1,004 questionnaires. The same survey in German generated a further 235 questionnaires. The Chinese version of the survey was launched in September 2023, and versions in other language groups are in preparation. Already to date, this is the most extensive multilingual survey of spontaneous ADCs worldwide.

I will have the pleasure of presenting some key findings of the surveys, and look forward to a lively exchange with the audience. Evelyn’s most recent book Spontaneous Contacts with the Deceased: A Large-Scale International Survey Reveals the Circumstances, Lived Experience and Beneficial Impact of After-Death Communications (ADCs) was awarded a 2023 Scientific and Medical Network book prize.”
