Far Calls – on Omen, Slips and Epiphanies

This is an original take on the hidden meaning of divination, sayings, oracles, prophecy, soothsayers and proverbs. We are pattern-seeking creatures seeking to escape the uncertainty of the future by various means, not only reading between the lines, but also specific modalities and interpreting events as presages, usually of disasters. Its treatment is largely chronological and its coverage pretty comprehensive, although I was surprised to see no discussion of synchronicity, while Freudian slips are covered. The volume will be of particular interest to linguists and cultural historians.
