How can we escape disenchantment?
One of the most powerful narratives gripping scientists, intellectuals, and the general culture in Europe during the early decades of the twentieth century – when the depth psychologies were being developed – was that the world had become disenchanted: stripped of genuine mystery, lacking inherent meaning, and unrelated to any spiritual or divine reality. This narrative remains dominant today and has profound implications for contemporary culture.
In this talk, Roderick Main discusses his recent book, Breaking the Spell of Disenchantment: Mystery, Meaning, and Metaphysics in the Work of C. G. Jung (2022), which argues that Jung’s analytical psychology both was deeply shaped by the narrative of disenchantment and radically challenges it.

Roderick Main, PhD, works at the University of Essex, UK, where he is a professor in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies and Director of the Centre for Myth Studies. His recent books include Holism: Possibilities and Problems (2020, co-edited), Jung, Deleuze, and the Problematic Whole (2021, co-edited), and Breaking the Spell of Disenchantment: Mystery, Meaning, and Metaphysics in the Work of C. G. Jung (2022).
