by Eldon Taylor ✦ Review by David Lorimer, April 2010
Subtitled 'exploring mind, meaning and mysteries', this book is designed to engage the reader in an investigative process of questioning beliefs and reflecting on the significance of events in our lives. The tone is set by a miraculous escape at the age of 17 when he stalled on a level crossing and the side of his vehicle was facing an oncoming train going out 100 miles an hour. The driver's side was crushed, his passenger had to be cut from the car, while he himself finds itself standing a few hundred feet away in a field. You can imagine the effect of such an experience, about which he writes: 'either a miracle had occurred or I was dead.' The story reminded me of the work of Hans Moolenburg on angels, where similar incidents are recounted. Another important turning point was a 'chance' meeting with an old man who was able to demonstrate the extent to which Middle Eastern mythology is incorporated in the story of Jesus. It is not surprising to read later on that the author does not think that the linear models of science can explain the mysteries of consciousness. Many other boxes are opened in the course of the book, which is itself a journey where the questions we ask help us navigate a course not only through life but also through the book.
