Transplants

A first-rate collection of essays in the 'Ethical Eye' series that also includes books on the human genome and cloning. Many of the ethical issues arise from a chronic shortage of donors, which is proportionately worse in the US than the UK. This drives stem cell and xenotransplantation research with a view to overcoming this shortage. The book is in three sections: the ethics of transplants, transplants in Europe and religions and transplants. The first section includes a very good essay on transplantation identity problems, but which makes no mention of the extraordinary evidence of concurrent 'memory transplant'. The second section looks at the situation in a number of different European countries as well as the overall problem of trade in organs. The third provides and overview of religious perspectives from Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Buddhism along with a French contribution on agnostic ethics. The volume is an indispensable guide to serious thought on the issues.
