The Very Good News about Wine
This well written book is as instructive as it is entertaining, making an authoritative case for the health benefits of moderate drinking, especially (antioxidant) red wine, in contrast to scaremongering tactics employed by health authorities who have continuously reduced the levels of so-called safe drinking, often wilfully distorting scientific studies that are amplified by sensational headlines from accompanying press releases. It turns out that not only moderate drinking is health-promoting, but moderate drinkers suffer from fewer illnesses and live longer than those who drink nothing at all. Based on extensive scientific studies and 340 footnotes – sometimes even revisiting raw data and quoting verbatim – it is very clear to the impartial reader that Tony’s conclusions are sound. He amply demonstrates that attempts to equate alcohol with tobacco are highly misleading propaganda. In the closing pages, Tony cheekily proposes that encouraging the consumption of red wine could reduce national health expenditures – based on the evidence he presents, he is probably right, but don’t expect such policy moves any time soon.
