by John R Hinnels ✦ Review by David Lorimer, August 2005
A highly recommendable collection for both students and interested general readers. The introduction contains two essays: one asking why we should study religions and the other a fascinating overview of the historical development of the study of religions. Then the first part covers key approaches to the study of religion: theology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, psychology and phenomenology. The second part takes 20 key issues in the study of religions, which gives the volume an immense scope. Among themes covered are gender, postmodernism, secularisation, mysticism and spirituality, new religious movements, fundamentalism, religion and politics, religion and science, and religion and the arts. This means that it can be used as a handbook as the need arises so that readers can orient themselves with a host of reliable guides and pointers.
