The Rediscovery of Wisdom
From Here to Antiquity in Quest of Sophia
This is a technical book that seeks to place wisdom once more at the centre of philosophy, returning to its original roots not simply as a study but a way of life. The author surveys the current scene of a philosophy without wisdom before moving on to a consideration of the Classical conception of philosophy where he analyses Plato and Aristotle in detail, showing the presence of God in both of these philosophers as well as wisdom in the authors of the Hebrew Bible. This leads on to a discussion of the decline and fall of this conception via its revival in Florentine Neoplatonism and on to Hume, Kant and Nietzsche as the executioners of God. The substance of this part is a brilliant schematic dissection and defence of the Cosmological Argument and the Argument from Design. This is a fine piece of work which one hopes will be read by the author's colleagues and contribute towards a revival of the classical conception of philosophy.
