The Psychology of Ultimate Concerns - Motivation and Spirituality in Personality

The phrase 'ultimate concern' comes from the theologian Paul Tillich. This book explores the interface between goals, motivation and subjective well-being, defining spirituality in terms of a search for meaning, for unity, for connectedness, for transcendence and for the highest of human potential. There is a particularly interesting section on goal predictors of subjective well-being, where research shows that materialistic and power-related goals are negatively correlated with well-being. Meaning is a central theme throughout the book and it is encouraging to learn of the burgeoning field of research in motivation and spirituality.
