The Non-Existence of God
A brilliant analysis of the arguments for and against the existence of God. Although written primarily as a textbook, the clarity of exposition makes it ideal as a primer for any reader who really wants to get to grips with the arguments. Everitt begins by discussing the role of reason and recent developments in epistemology before moving on to the classical arguments, then to miracles, morality, religious experience, arguments from scale and problems about evil and omnipotence. It was surprising that Alister Hardy did not feature in the chapter on religious experience but the logical implications are fully discussed. Not all readers will agree with Everitt's conclusion that the empirical evidence tells against theism, which is in any event self-contradictory, but they will be given a good run for their money.
