The New Rulers of the World
Some readers may have seen John Pilger's chilling documentary a few weeks ago, which conveyed much of the substance of this book. A good deal of it is devoted to the evolution of the current situation in Iraq - CIA complicity with the Ba'ath Party, the arming of Saddam Hussein in the 80s, the maintenance of the status quo to prevent Kurds and Shi'as establishing their own state, the devastating effects of depleted uranium following 1991 (soon to be repeated on a much larger scale), not to mention the loss of 500,000 children's lives as a result of UN sanctions. On these and other matters John Pilger boldly lifts the lid, quoting some awkward interviews with those in power. But make no mistake: the US is aiming for 'full spectrum dominance'. This applies literally to military capability (partly for the securing of adequate resources) but also commercially through globalisation and control of markets such as the food supply chain. An eye-opening book.
