The Myth of the American Superhero

A fascinating and important book examining the historical and spiritual roots of the superhero myth and its damaging effects on the US democratic vision. The authors argue that the American version of the monomyth can be traced back to tales of redemption that have strong Christian undertones. To the extent that this extends to unelected figures (or even gunmen) taking the law into their own hands the myth gives rise to destructive consequences. The analysis is brought right up to date with the rhetoric of George W. Bush but also covers cowboys, heroic presidents, Star Trek, Star Wars, video games and Rambo.
