The Ground of Being

Four lectures given to the Temenos Academy and which cover the nature of mystical knowledge and three key Western mystics - Dionysius the Areopagite, John Scottus Eriugena and Meister Eckhart. They explore key themes associated with these particular mystics, respectively the via positiva and via negativa, the multiple and the One, and the ground of the self in God. The same mystery is common to all, 'the mystery of the union of the soul with God' and this is set against the background of the Incarnation. Milne argues that, although these mystics are outsiders, they 'dwell right at the heart and centre of our civilisation' in their pursuit of ultimate truth within a larger community of mind.
