The Four Gospels

Kalmia Bittleston was ordained in the Christian Community. These translations into verse represent her life's work. The book is put in context by a series of introductions written at different times when the separate volumes came out. These are all reprinted here. Particularly helpful is the introduction to the Gospel of John and the explanation of the I Am sayings in their context. The translation itself is both lyrical and precise. The simple verse format creates a certain rhythm, all the more so if read aloud. The translator aims to bring the words to life in the heart, rather than an absorption through the head. In this way a deeper understanding can be achieved and the words can reverberate into the life of the reader.
