Contemporary Art and the Pale of History - Updated Edition
by Donald Duspit ✦ Review by David Lorimer, August 2005
A refreshing book that dares to argue that art is over because it has lost touch with aesthetics and beauty. It has been replaced by 'postart', a genre that 'elevates the banal over the enigmatic, the scatological over the sacred, cleverness over creativity'. For me Duspit is spot on in his analysis of what is, frankly, simply decadence, as illustrated by Damian Hirst's collection of butt ends on the cover. In fact one of Hirst's 'installations' was removed from the window of a Mayfair gallery by the cleaner, who clearly had more sense than the gallery owner who had put its sales value in six figures! Kuspit traces this trend back to Duchamp and Barnett Newman. Instead, he proposes that the future of art lies with the 'New Old Masters' - let's hope so!
