by Lester R. Brown ✦ Review by David Lorimer, December 2002
The follow-up to Lester Brown's 'Eco-Economy' reviewed earlier in the year, this book gives essential background information and analysis to the current interface between ecology and economics. The first part deals with the economic costs of ecological deficits in terms of deserts invading China (including the impact of widespread dust storms), the food prospect in the light of topsoil loss and water deficit, and the rising costs of climate change. The next part lists twelve eco-economy indicators, which are the subject of regular email updates - population, slowing of grain harvest growth and fish catch, shrinking forest cover and increased global temperatures; on the plus side we have soaring wind power generation, bicycle production and solar cells. Then the third part provides eco-economy updates on energy and climate, population and health, food, land and water, forests and fisheries, and finally ecological economics.
