The Case for a GM Free Sustainable World

This is the full version of the executive summary published in the last issue. It is the most succinct case available against the widespread introduction of GM foods and for an approach based on agro-ecological sustainability. The close links between industry, science and government make the existence of such an independent panel vital, and it was a pity that they received no mainstream media attention during the recent UK Government public consultation exercise. The point is that there is considerable scientific unease about these developments, especially within a context of holistic science and ecological sustainability. Readers may be surprised to learn at the end of the book that 'sustainable agricultural practices can deliver substantial increase in food production at low cost'. Moreover, as they observe, 'because the root cause of hunger is inequality among nations and peoples, any method of boosting food production that deepens inequality is bound to fail to reduce hunger'.
