Balancing the Energies of the Body with the Cosmos
by Michael J. Shea PhD ✦ Review by David Lorimer, April 2024
Based on his decades-long experience of Eastern medicine, this book presents a comprehensive holistic guide to manual therapy practices to optimise the immune system and heal the deepest spiritual suffering of our contemporary world. The author argues that such suffering is at the root of the modern epidemic of metabolic syndrome and other widespread health issues, and that the pervasive degradation of human body is not only due to the food we eat and the air we breathe, but also to toxic thoughts and emotions. He envisages a renewed wisdom-version of the body using the practices he explains to overcome the many splits in the modern psyche, also to reconnect with nature. The seriousness of our predicament is highlighted by the fact about half a billion people are obese, and another half billion have type two diabetes. An important diagram (p. 14) illustrates dimensions of self-regulation through traditional medicine, healing and manual therapeutic arts so that we can balance what he calls the fluid body along with gut metabolism, heart empathy and brain discernment. We also need to cultivate primary respiration and dynamic stillness so as to allow interbeing and the heart of compassion to surface in our awareness for physical, emotional and spiritual health. The detail here makes it primarily a book for practitioners, but general readers can also benefit, especially if they are in a process of restoring their health.
