by Charles Dowding ✦ Review by David Lorimer, August 2007
An essential handbook for would-be organic gardeners by one of the pioneers who has been at it for more than 25 years. His originality lies in his 'no-dig' philosophy, which is explained early in the book. Instead, he recommends that one spread compost on one's beds and allow the worms to do the rest of the work, having cleared out the weeds in the first place. The author explains all the basics of sowing seeds, raising plants, making compost and living with pests. He also incorporates a biodynamic philosophy. The second part deals more specifically with particular vegetables and fruits, giving guidance on varieties and seasonality. His system of narrow raised beds helps avoid compaction through treading on the earth as one is clearing it up. The main message is to encourage the healthy life of the soil so as to maximise the chances of producing healthy plants which in turn contribute to our own health.
