Megalithic Measures and Rhythms

This book summarises the findings of Anne Macaulay, who was the youngest daughter of Sir David Russell. Following in the footsteps of Alexander Thom, the author investigates the geometry and cultural significance of stone circle sites with many photographs and line drawings to guide the reader. She reminds us that in ancient times there was no means of telling the time except by observing the sun, moon and stars. The geometry of stone circles along with a knowledge of astronomy enabled our ancestors to master the calendar. By also measuring stone circles on the continent, the author is able to show that the yardstick of the Greek foot is also present in British megalithic remains. She proposes that the British megalithic way of thought be called the Apollo Wisdom, since Apollo implies the notion of fundamental proportion.
