Kant on Swedenborg, Dreams of a Spirit-Seer and Other Writings
This is the most significant edition to date of Kant's satirical book on Swedenborg, written in 1766. Not only is it a new translation, but it also contains a wealth of previously uncollected material including other writings of Kant and reviews of the book by prominent contemporary authors such as Herder. It is, as some commentators have argued, a pivotal book that represents the struggle between Enlightenment rationalism and visionary modes of thought. Johnson sheds new light on Kant's ambiguous position derived from his view that he could neither completely dismiss nor wholly accept Swedenborg's capacities and writings.
