Judaism - History, Belief and Practice

This must be the most comprehensive textbook for the study of Judaism and is, as the subtitle suggests, divided into three sections making 90 chapters in all. A novel feature of the volume is a companion web site - www.routledge.com/textbooks/0415236614 - which students and teachers can consult for further elucidation. Just over half the book is taken up by history. Each chapter contains text, illustrative source quotations, questions for discussion and a (formidable) list of further reading. The maps are very helpful and a number of illustrations amplify the text. The second part examines the major doctrines and beliefs of Judaism while the third focuses on living community practice. A remarkable resource that will surely become a classic reference source.
