Into the Magic Shop

A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart

Into The Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart by James R Doty was first published in 2016 and is well worth revisiting in anticipation of the author’s new book coming out this May and guest speaking at April’s Mystics and Scientists Conference. Into The Magic Shop is more than a fascinating memoir by Doty, a world-renowned neurosurgeon and professor at Stanford University.

The book opens with Doty’s own personal story about his early adolescent years living in poverty and family dysfunction in the depressed desert town of Lancaster, California. He describes how the trajectory of his life took a remarkable turn one summer when he entered the town magic shop where he met Ruth, the shop owner’s mother, who was visiting her son and helping him out in his shop. Doty cautiously engaged in conversation with her about magic.

Ruth took a special liking to Doty and offered to teach him the real thing, the ‘real magic.’ For free. Doty took Ruth up on her offer, though he had no clue what these lessons would entail or what Ruth even meant by ‘real magic.’ Doty returned the next day to embark on what became a very powerful and dramatic life changing journey, leading him into the very heart of consciousness.

Before getting into her lessons with Doty, Ruth asked him to consider carefully what he wants from life, cautioning that he must be careful what he wishes for. He can make his wishes come true, she told him, but he also bears responsibility for their outcome but as readers of Into the Magic Shop come to learn, Doty, only twelve years old at the time, did not fully grasp the full meaning behind Ruth’s warning.

Their first sessions were confusing for Doty. Ruth began her lessons teaching him breathing techniques and ways to quiet the mind, practices we take for granted now in our current sub-culture of an expanding re-awakening and awareness of consciousness but were very esoteric and out of place in the small, depressed town of Lancaster, California in the 1960s. But Doty, young as he was, was determined to live a different life. He persevered, keeping these lessons private while he struggled to understand how deep breathing could possibly turn into magic. Over the summer, Doty’s world slowly opened as he learned to quiet his mind through breathwork, mantra, and meditation, while also learning about forgiveness, compassion and intention. After some time, his mother noticed Doty becoming calmer and less fidgety. Doty also learned to ground himself at the centre of his own universe and hold his newfound inner strength, or power.

Meanwhile, Doty’s family experienced problems – emotional, physical, and financial. Quite unexpectedly, the day arrived when Doty witnessed his own ‘real magic’ right when the family faced eviction and things could not be any worse. Miraculously his visualisations of financial help brought an answer to their door, alleviating their dire situation at the last minute. This sealed Doty’s belief that he can make anything happen and he works harder than ever with the lessons Ruth teaches him.

Doty’s road in life was not a perfect one and with honest candour he leaves little out as he described the highs and lows of his successes, his misjudgments, and the course of events that follow. Despite achieving everything he originally told Ruth he wanted, somewhere along the way Doty had forgotten about her and her prescient warnings about the power of visualisation and manifestation. His sense of ego and bravado became enlarged, as well as his entitlement to reap his hard-earned rewards: He purchased fast, expensive cars and frolicked in the high life he had fantasised during his youth. But things were not going so well. After a series of humbling experiences with devastating consequences, Doty realised that his early dreams of wealth and power did not necessarily lead to a life of fulfilment or happiness.

He realised that he had abused the gifts he had been given, including one of his childhood dreams to become a neurosurgeon, against so many odds, a profession he had achieved yet abandoned for the world of finance. After crashing to near rock bottom, Doty remembered Ruth’s advice about being careful what he had wished for and he came to a full understanding of the importance of intention. He took a long hard look at himself before picking himself literally off the floor, dusting himself off while asking himself who it is he really wants to be, that those early shoes no longer fit the true man he knew resided inside of himself. He remembered Ruth and realised the magnitude of what she so freely gave to him, the precious gift of unconditional love, and what that actually means. Coming to understand what was really important to him, Doty redefined his dreams and once again made them come true, returning to the practice Ruth had taught him so many years earlier.

Doty’s journey is a beautiful example of asking the universe to help manifest dreams, of understanding the essential properties and universal concept of love, that is the profound heartbeat of our cosmos from which it is essential to centre not only one’s own life but that of everything and everyone around us. Doty’s life is an example of how anything is possible when one is grounded in the well-being of goodness and loving intentions. From a life of poverty, misery and struggle, Doty is now a professor and is also the founder of The Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education that came to being through generous funding from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, among other altruistic benefactors.

Into the Magic Shop, while not a ‘self-help’ book, certainly inspires the reader that they too can change themselves and the people and world around them. It shows that the doors of consciousness can be opened by anyone, even a poor adolescent living in the desert. Doty’s new book is out on May 7, 2024, Mind Magic: The Neuroscience of Manifestation. Doty calls for a wider practice of manifestation and describes how we can change the brain and access the awe and wonder of this spectacular world in which we are privileged to live and where we can intentionally give love back to it.
