Rather than looking at beginnings, this book focuses on ends, beginning with our own mortality. The author then widens his lens to consider the future of humanity, the web of life, threats to the biosphere, moving on to the demise of the Sun, the ageing of the galaxy and the end of the universe itself. This might all sound rather gloomy, but the author writes in a very engaging style, providing a point of reflection at the beginning of each chapter. All this heightens one's wonder at the universe and life and the extraordinary situation in which we find ourselves. The whole book opens up a vast perspective on life, space and time, and is enlivened with many stories as well as clear explanations and illustrations.
