by Jose Goldemberg, Oswaldo Lucon ✦ Review by David Lorimer, April 2010
Second edition of a book first published in 1996 in the wake of the Rio meeting. It proposes an important relationship between energy, environment and sustainable development, providing a broader framework within which coherent policy can be formulated. Climate change has come to the forefront of public consciousness, but this needs the kind of connections made in this book incorporating security, environmental impact assessment and the role of renewable energy technologies. All these aspects are thoroughly investigated in this fundamental textbook, which also incorporates an analysis of consumption patterns and lifestyles. Its recommendations parallel those of a report from the major scientific academies, although in this case there are still hard choices to make an ideological divisions between centralisers and decentralisers.
