Civil Society

This book asks the question: is civil society the big idea for the 21st century? Or is this rather confused concept simply another false horizon. The author shows that there are three mutually incompatible definitions, all of which are incomplete: analytical models or forms of associational life, normative models, and finally civil society as the 'public sphere'. Edwards takes elements from all models by suggesting that civil society is 'simultaneously a goal to aim for, a means to achieve it and a framework for engaging with each other about ends and means'. A very useful discussion.
