This is a vivid portrait of Catherine of Siena and her time - she achieved a remarkable amount in her short 33 years, becoming influential in her early 20s in both a political and spiritual sense. She was a campaigner for peace and was instrumental in persuading Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome. She also displayed the stigmata. The book covers her daily life as well's the social context in which she lived and her iron self-discipline in spiritual matters. She had her own authority as a mystic, drawing inspiration directly from her experiences of God.
