This is an interesting interdisciplinary study about the causes of global warming. While not denying the role of carbon emissions, Foster also argues that the root cause is a cyclical decline in the Earth's magnetic field, which culminates in a magnetic pole shift. He contends that we have reached a stage where the magnetic vortices over the poles no longer contribute to the formation of polar ice. He predicts that global warming will advance at an exponential rate with a further decline in the magnetic field, pushing us towards a tipping point where positive feedback loops kick in. Although this factor if not frequently mentioned, Foster draws on research from a number of universities to make his case. In the course of the book he explains the overall ecological context as well as the mechanics of both the geomagnetic field and the thermohaline circulation. A well-informed and stimulating if unusual contribution to the debate.
