The first critical analysis of the positive and negative impacts of ecotourism, using extensive case histories based on Belize. The book examines the extent to which ecotourism lives up to its professed ideals rather than being a form of 'green greed'. It argues that ecotourism sits within the current capitalist system rather than challenging it. This leads to a 'blue-green', business-oriented and weak form of sustainability in terms of conservation where the environment is still treated as an economic resource.
