Transition in Action

This is the latest in a series of books beginning with Rob Hopkins' original idea of transition, but takes the process one stage further by publishing in an eminently readable form the energy descent action plan for Totnes and district up to 2030. The premise behind the analysis is that we face a very different future beyond peak oil pan with the increasingly apparent effects of climate change. The Totnes community as a whole envisages a more localised and nourishing future, and the result here has been contributed to by over 500 local people. Rather than seeing our current situation as a crisis, the authors regarded as an opportunity for entrepreneurship, creativity and an enhanced quality of life. This involves a wide range of issues such as food and energy security, transport and housing. Interestingly, the section on nurturing transition discusses the role of the arts and the inner dimensions of transition. In each area there is a detailed pathway and timeline, explaining how it affects and involves the various stakeholders. This is a book that should find its way into the office of every chief executive of local authorities throughout the country, so that they can use the insights as a stimulus to their own local thinking.
