A really fascinating book with both a historical and contemporary scope. The first part illustrates migrations in history, including the Mediterranean, colonial migrations and the great migration from Europe to the USA during the 19th and early 20th centuries involving more than 50 million people. The analytical maps bring the whole process to life and highlight the scale involved. Contemporary patterns include post-war migration of workers, and the situation in various parts of the globe as well as within countries like India and the USA is discussed. The third and longest section treats such topics as refugees, asylum, internally displaced persons, student and skilled migration, the implications of climate change for migration patterns and even international retirement, which in Europe involves people from the North moving to the Mediterranean, mainly Spain and to a lesser extent Italy. Finally, there is a section on technical data and sources. Only with such a volume can one appreciate the extent and implications of migration patterns.
