Deeper than Words: Living the Apostles Creed
With a foreword by the Dalai Lama based on his dialogues between Buddhism and Christianity - including the author - this book is an exploration of the words of the Apostles' Creed and it is subdivided accordingly. Each chapter contains the same three questions, followed by a personal reflection. The questions are about what the term really means, how we know this is the case, and why make such a point of this. The format makes the book suitable for daily spiritual reflection within the Christian tradition. Brother David goes beyond the words to the spirit and meaning behind them, drawing on his own lifelong experience illustrated with a number of anecdotes. In asking whether we even make time to breathe, Brother David recalls an incident when a Zen teacher, Bernie Glassman, was being ordained Abbot. Suddenly, his watch alarm are went off in the middle of the ceremony, and Bernie explained that he had taken a vow to interrupt whatever he might be doing every day at noon to think thoughts of peace. He therefore invited people to join him.
