Topologies of the Flesh

This book follows on from the author's previous two books, the latest of which was 'Dimensions of Apeiron'. What Rosen calls the lifeworld has given way to the lure of technology and the pull of cyberspace, overshadowing the sensory immediacy of the natural world. He takes this back to the Renaissance, where the natural world was first objectified and a deeper split arose between self and other, subject and object. This process has now progressed to a point where it threatens the very life of our planet. Rosen proposes that our estrangement from nature entails an estrangement from ourselves and from each other. However, we cannot simply go back in time. He suggests that we have the possibility of passing beyond abstraction and through the boundary of limitative thinking. Drawing on Heidegger, Bohm, Merleau-Ponty, Jung and others, Rosen uses topology to expand our understanding. This is a technical philosophical work that repays close study.
