The Ten Great Ideas of Science

A book about what the author considers the 'ten great ideas of science'. Written with his customary eloquence and width of reference, Atkins leads the reader to what he calls 'the summit of understanding'. The ten ideas are evolution by natural selection, DNA, the conservation of energy, entropy, atomic matter, symmetry, quanta and wave-particle duality, the expansion of the universe, spacetime curved by matter, and Goedel's incompleteness theorem. At the end of the book, Atkins declares (faintly echoing Kant's wonderment) that the only two deep problems left for science to solve are the origins of the universe and the nature of consciousness. Here he supposes that the construction of a genuine emulator of consciousness may shed some light but perhaps not conclusively. The book is literally a tour de force and should find a place on your popular science shelf.
