On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness

A constructive book from a leading deconstructionist. In this book Derrida addresses the only too apparent tensions between refugee and asylum rights and the ethic of hospitality; and the dilemma of reconciliation and amnesty where traumatic episodes demand forgiveness, as in South Africa. Throughout the book Derrida argues by means of examples that true forgiveness means forgiving the unforgivable. A tall order but one that promises the possibility of breaking the cycle of violence.
