A sensitive and erudite book that combines aesthetics with theology, drawing on some great paintings to make his point. Gorringe offers a positive theology of the senses as instruments of grace, dealing with each sense in turn and addressing both is positive and negative associations. He considers 'sins of the flesh as well as the role of asceticism as self-discipline. His last chapter, 'Celebrating Bodies' includes the role of liturgy and sacraments in the education of desire.
