by Coleston Brown ✦ Review by David Lorimer, August 2007
Subtitled 'the power of symbols for spiritual renewal', this book builds on the work of Gareth Knight by presenting a set of meditation exercises designed to enable experience of the three primary methods of magic, that is meditation, inner pilgrimage and ceremonial ritual. . He also explains that magic refers to the power of mediation which then brings about transformation. The two types of symbol – inner imaginal and outer material – are both conduits for spiritual energy. The rest of the introduction is devoted to an explanation of the qualities of magical symbols. The chapters that follow explain a number of key symbols in a developmental sequence: the sphere, the axis, the holy fire, the centre, the wheel of life, the three realms, the planes of being and the Miryam tradition. Each chapter explains the nature of the simple and concludes with a meditation to be practised before moving onto the next phase. Underlying this meditation is this the practice of kenosis, or emptying. In the chapter on the wheel of life explains both the cycles of nature and those of the Christian year, enabling the reader to meditate on the transformation of cyclic energies involving birth, youth, maturity, death and rebirth. The final chapter on the Miryam tradition evokes the power of the feminine, describing the nine Marys of biblical tradition. The book brings the inner symbols of Christianity alive.
