by Michael Rice ✦ Review by David Lorimer, August 2006
This is a fascinating and informative book about the golden hunting hounds of ancient Egypt by a specialist historian. It operates at two distinct levels as a history of a particular species but also of the first civilisation to form a special bond with the dog and to breed the hounds over several millennia. Rice argues that both humans and dogs have co-evolved a special relationship that persists to the present day. The author himself had a Pharaoh Hound during the 1980s, which he thinks was descended from the ancient species and to whom he dedicates the book. He ranges widely over dogs around the Mediterranean, and also describes the canine gods of ancient Egypt, among them Anubis. Dog lovers will be highly intrigued by this remarkable treatise.
