Subtitled 'Corporate Power versus the Public Interest', this is a hard-hitting analysis of the regulation of biotechnology worldwide. He argues that the whole process represents a transfer of power away from people to corporations, from poor to rich and from public to private. The main strategic aim of biotech companies in the agricultural sector is to gain control of the world's food supply and make farmers (especially in developing countries) dependent on their products. This has meant intensification of labour and land use, increased reliance on external inputs and a drain of labourers from the countryside into (in many instances) urban slums. And it is these urban slums that are forecast to grow exponentially in the next twenty years. So all this is part of the Green Revolution. A highly informative read.
