The Future of Training in Psychotherapy and Counselling
Instrumental, Relational and Transpersonal Perspectives
A book principally aimed at psychotherapists to encourage them to think about the nature of training and therefore practice. John proposes that there are in fact three ways of doing therapy, which are not often distinguished: the instrumental - treating the client; the relational or authentic - meeting the client; and the transpersonal, involving a deeper connection with the client. This approach is then applied to a wide range of issues: theory, skills, supervision, ethics and research among others. The result is a complex but highly informed discussion that will enhance the understanding of practitioners in the field.
