by Jerome Eckstein ✦ Review by David Lorimer, August 2004
An original book by the Professor Emeritus of Judaic Studies at the University of Albany, New York. It is simple and direct in style, having been written for students at the request of a colleague. Eckstein's key new concept is his contrast between life experiences that are interested or goal-oriented and those that are 'intraested' or non-goal oriented. Etymologically this means to be 'involved within' and is the opposite of activity that is instrumental or pragmatic. In other words it addresses being rather than doing even if activity is involved. The author's theodicy is influenced by his cultural background and the testing issue of the holocaust, which many interpret as indicating a lack of cosmic purpose. He feels himself to be 'metaphysically lonely' but builds up an inspiring ethic based on a metaphysical dignity arising 'when a sense of self-worth nobly faces the absurdity of existence'. Dignity for the author signifies both the essence of ethics and of a humanism that includes truth, beauty and goodness. But love has the final word as it transcends dignity. A profound meditation.
