Why Bother with Theology?

This is a radical and critical look at the state of Christianity in Britain today. As the title suggests, the author argues that theology has by and large lost touch with the concerns of the general public and even with the clergy. The irony of this is not lost on the author whose professional career has been spent in theology publishing. Nor is the Alpha Course the answer since its major appeal lies only in a distinctive area of the social spectrum. Alex considers our postmodern situation as well as offerings from New Age spirituality – mostly through a book by William Bloom. Many of his criticisms in this field are well founded but he does not touch on the deeper Gnostic stream that yearns for greater use of contemplation and meditative practices within the Church and which correspond to a 'deep ecumenism' based on experience rather than rational exposition. He proposes a secular theology addressed to both individual and community that encompasses the whole world and which is a radical critique of existing economic, social and political structures. Is it possible to take theology out into the world in which people are under increasing time pressure? Part of his original answer lies in his use of fiction and film, which are amply illustrated in the book.. This is a stimulating read that addresses a central spiritual issue of contemporary life and which should be on the desk of the new Archbishop when he takes up his post.
