The Problem of the Unity of Science

This volume represents the proceedings of the International Academy of the Philosophy of Science in 2000. It addresses the important theme of the unity of science from a number of different angles with the additional linguistic hurdle that two of the essays are in French. The problems faced are compounded by the necessary distinctions between natural and human sciences and most authors do not take the view that reductionism can accomplish the unity envisaged. An essay on consilience finds the approach useful but rejects the extreme position of sociobiology. A useful text for the technically minded.
