How doing less and noticing more can help us thrive in a stressed-out world
by Dr Jonty Heaversedge, Ed Halliwell ✦ Review by David Lorimer, April 2011
A highly readable introduction to mindfulness – learning how to be, doing less and noticing more. Through the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn and others, mindfulness has become enormously popular and is now used in therapeutic contexts. This book is written by a GP and the author of the Mental Health Foundation's Mindfulness Report. This practice and others like it is very important for our stressed-out world where people are not only physically busy, but have busy minds and are also under emotional stress. All of this is now being thoroughly investigated by science. The authors explain the background in Buddhism and the basic practice, also drawing on their own experiences. This means that they sit alongside the reader as people go through the process. There are chapters on mindfulness of mind, mindfulness of feelings and finally mindfulness of life. As they say, mindfulness is not a cure for our pain but allows us to wake up from the anaesthetic of activity.
