by Carter Lindberg ✦ Review by David Lorimer, April 2010
A magisterial textbook in which the reader will discover the full extent of the various European reformations and indeed the counter-reformation. The book begins by sketching out social and agricultural conditions in the late Middle Ages which gave rise to a series of reformations starting with Martin Luther. It then moves on to consider other teachers such as Melanchthon, Thomas Munzer and Zwingli before looking at the Anabaptists, the diet of Augsburg in 1530 and the Geneva Reformation of John Calvin. There are also chapters on the Reformation in the Netherlands, England and Scotland, followed by a consideration of the counter-reformation and the legacies of the Reformations. It is an extraordinary tour de force, the fruit of a lifetime of scholarship put across in a highly readable style.
