Optimism - the Lesson of Ages
The author of this book is not well known to the general public, but he was a contemporary of and influence on William James and his understanding of mysticism, of which he had first-hand experience. It goes beyond reason and theology to assert the oneness of God and the high calling of the human being to live with force and freedom in the light of this realisation. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics but I did not find it shed a great deal of light on contemporary concerns. Personally, I would far rather read William James himself.
