Identity in Modern Society

Although written primarily within the academic social psychological community, this book is an accessible account of developments in the field as they reflect wider social concerns. The author presents his own integrative Self-Aspect Model of Identity (SAMI) which has certain similarities with Ken Wilber's Four Quandrant model, but it is not surprising that Wilber does not even feature in the bibliography. Academics are mostly sealed off from his work in spite of the ironic fact that Wilber is the most translated academic author in the US! Simon deals mainly with the interaction between individual and collective identities, defining the former in relation to the latter, but his model would be expanded if he were to incorporate Wilber's insights into the inner-outer axis as well as the individual collective.
