The Soul's Religion

Cultivating a Profoundly Spiritual Way of Life

This book is the sequel to 'Care of the Soul' and exemplifies what the author calls the search for 'more than what is'. It addresses the mystery of human life in a way that suggests a living embrace of mystery rather than treating it as a problem to be solved. The expression of personal spirituality is a response to the moralising and intellectualising undertaken by Christianity in particular. Although Moore spent 12 years in a Catholic order, he draws on Zen and Taoism as well as the experiences of Christian mystics in the 'cloud of unknowing'. The eight sections of the book are profound meditations on some of the central themes of the spiritual life such as emptiness, alchemy, ordeal, God and the nature of the holy life. Everywhere paradox abounds, so that 'a sense of self appears when you no longer need to be somebody'.
