Common Objects of Love

Moral Reflection and the Shaping of Community; the 2001 Stob Lectures

A series of three lectures by the Oxford Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology on moral reflection and the shaping of community in action that can be sustained over time. The book takes as its starting point Augustine's idea that we know only as we love and that moral reflection - the identification of objects of love - is most effective in organised community. The context is Christian but the themes addressed are thoroughly contemporary, such as the nature of publicity and the relationship between authority and authoritarianism.
