An acclaimed one-volume history of life on earth from the formation of the solar system to the present day. Human beings are characterised as 'able apes' and 'great modifiers', appearing only in the 11th of 12 chapters. The story is told with great verve and clarity. Looking ahead, the author points out that energy use (at any rate of hydrocarbons) will have to be decoupled from economic growth during this century. Moreover, our agricultural and commercial activities lock us into the current climate regime, but Southwood is optimistic that we do have the power to change - but before or after a catastrophe?
